The marriage is first solemnized (often by Arya Samaj ceremony) and then registered with the SDM office of the area where either partner resides or where the marriage took place. Once registered, the SDM issues a Government Marriage Certificate.

2. Court Marriage under the Special Marriage Act 1954 (SMA)

The Special Marriage Act 1954 is a religion-neutral law. It applies to inter-religion couples — Hindu–Muslim, Hindu–Christian, Hindu–Sikh, or any other combination — and even to same-religion couples who prefer a civil marriage with no religious ceremony. The Act requires a 30-day public notice period after the marriage application is filed at the Marriage Officer's office. Any objections raised during that period are inquired into. If no valid objection arises, the marriage is solemnized on the 31st day before three witnesses and the Marriage Officer.
