Marriage Registration in Delhi — Complete Guide

If your marriage has already been solemnized (in a temple, gurudwara, church or by Arya Samaj ceremony), you can register the marriage with the Delhi Government to obtain the official SDM-issued Marriage Certificate. The Supreme Court (in Seema vs Ashwani Kumar, 2006) has made marriage registration compulsory in India. Yes. There is no time limit. Whether your marriage is a month old or twenty years old, registration can be done with appropriate affidavits. Late-registration fees may apply at the SDM office. हाँ, पुरानी शादी का भी पंजीकरण हो सकता है।
Do both husband and wife need to be physically present? +
Yes — both partners must appear before the SDM on the hearing date along with the two witnesses. We will be present to guide you through the entire process.
Can it be done online without visiting SDM office? +
The application is filed online, but the final hearing requires physical appearance at the SDM. There is no fully-online option for the final issuance.
Is the SDM certificate the same as the Arya Samaj certificate? +
Both are legally valid. The SDM certificate is the Government-printed one — accepted everywhere — while the Arya Samaj certificate is the ceremonial proof. Most couples obtain both.
